A STUDY OF EFFECTS OF NOISE ON THE MENTAL HEALTH OF INHABITANTS IN URBAN SETTING

Abstract
For the purpose of considering the effect of noise on the mental health of townspeople, the author choosed 211 teachers working in junior high schools of Busan. The samples were devided into two groups: more noisy area and less noisy residential area. The investigation had been carried out from September
to October in 1974. Fifty one questions of C. M. 1.
(Cornell Medical Index-Health Questionnaire), which consisted with symptoms to be found frequently in the mentally disturbed, had been given to all the subjects.
The results are as followings;
1. Mean number of complained symptioms in 211 teachers is 10.87, and out of them 208 tc,achers(98.6% ) complained more over three of symptoms. It implies that considerable number of townspeople have some degree of psychological disturbancs.
2. Mean number of complained symptoms in 130 techers working at the schools located in more noisy area is 12.59. and in 81 teachers working at the schools located in less noisy residential area it is 9.14. So the former complained significantly more numerous number of symptoms than the later did. It implies that noise affects considerably on the mental health of townspeople.
3. The rates of complained symptoms of all teachers for each item are as followings; item of sensitivity is the highest in rate, and items of inadequacy and anger are the next ones.
